About Me

Hello, I'm Susie Webb. I'm a journalist telling data-driven stories.

I am currently a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill where I study journalism, international politics and data science. Last summer I was the 2023 data visuals fellow based in Austin for The Texas Tribune where I divied my time between telling short, medium and long term visual data stories. Previously, I have worked as an editor for Morocco World News based in Rabat, Morocco where I edited daily news stories and reported on a cultural festival in Essaouira. I've also worked as the data editor and city and state editor for The Daily Tar Heel where I helped build the paper's online multimedia presence and directed local/state political coverage. My project The Abortion Issue, where I had to crack into our website's code to for the first time integrate custom HTML/CSS/JavaScript into our website, took home third place in the AC Press Multimedia Story of the Year contest. I've worked as a metro news reporter at The Charlotte Observer for a summer where I covered issues of housing inequality and climate change. I was also editor of Potomac Local News in 2020 where I directed coverage of COVID-19 shutdowns and Black Lives Matter protests for a newsroom twice my age.

Beyond Journalism

Beyond journalism, I love rock climbing, hiking and being out in nature. I am a self-declared chai connoisseur and love gardening. At UNC, I was a D1 Women's Rugby athlete and also lead backpacking trips as an expeditions coordinator for our outdoor adventure program. I am currently pursuing a senior honors thesis on biased representations of criminality in the news and am working with the Center of Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media as a student researcher. One of my proudest moments was summiting Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak.
